To what extent do you see the women Essay To what extent do you see the women in the play as victims in a mans world? How might the response of a modern audience to Gertrude and Ophellia differ from that of Shakespeares time? Hamlet is a story of revenge, betrayal and confused love, set in the Elizabethan period. Shakespeare often interpreted everyday life into his plays; therefore each one would reflect the society of that time. For many years in the past, women played a small role socially, economically and politically. As a result of this, many works of literature were reflective of this diminutive role of women. They were not thought of as equal to men. They had hardly any rights and were expected to obey men1. The women were simply seen to bear children and also to take care of them. They had no political voice and were very rarely educated. They were often regarded as a possession, the men in the family always firmly in control of their future. However, in contrast to this trend, in Hamlet the women in the play are driving factors for the actions of many other characters. Although it was very much a society dominated by man, womens influence was obvious in many aspects of life. Both Gertrude and Ophelia affected many of the decisions and actions done by Hamlet throughout the play. Hamlet is based in Elsinore. Elsinore, also, does not seem to be a place where women matter very much. The political voice in this world are all men, and where necessary they are prepared to use women, even their own family, in the power political game. The play is mainly based around the thoughts and actions of these men and as there are only two female characters in the play, this could represent how men dont value women and their say through this time period. Gertrude influenced Hamlet significantly throughout the play. Hamlet was very angered by his mothers remarriage to Claudius. It could be suggested that in order to marry Gertrude, Claudius kills his brother, Old Hamlet. Hamlet strives to seek revenge against Claudius for the death of his father. Therefore, Gertrude is the driving factor for the whole set-up of the play. There is no suggestion to say that Gertrude knew about the murder of her late husband yet her hasty marriage to Claudius could reveal how she cant survive alone, as a woman, in a world ruled by males2. She seems to be seeking dominance from another man, and Claudius was the perfect solution for her. Gertrudes speedy marriage makes Hamlet feel that she and all women are untrustworthy: Hamlet-Let me not think ont- Frailty, thy name is woman- (Act 1 Scene 2 Line 148) Here, Hamlet makes the generalisation that all women are weak. He displays very little respect for women in general, never-mind his own mother. Hamlet victimises his mother here as his feelings of anger are thrown directly upon her, the weaker of the species. Hamlet maintains a formal politeness towards his mother as the play progresses, but his asides are bitter and deeply critical: For look how cheerfully my mother looks and my father died withins two hours (Act 3 Scene 2 Line 130) It appears that Gertrude is a frequent victim of Hamlet throughout the play. Not once did Hamlet actually consider his mothers feelings or ask about them. His disgust for female sexuality caused him to lash out at her verbally and sometimes even physically. He didnt realise that Gertrude was trying to be supportive of him as well as her husband, whom conventions said she must also adore. Instead of listening to her opinions, Hamlet used the Queen in order to make himself feel better and also as a means of releasing his anger. It could be implied that Hamlets depiction of his mothers behaviour could simply be necessary to trap Claudius but from Act 3 Scene 2 Line 135, Hamlet also seems to be trying to shame his mother publicly into feeling guilty for her behaviour in remarrying. He says sarcastically: O heavens, die two months ago and not forgotten yet! Clearly, Hamlet has little respect for his mother and although he dismisses her regularly, Gertrude still seems to endure him and do the best she can for him. This reveals how Gertrude, as a woman, is slightly passive. At the start of Act 3 Scene 4, Gertrude starts by trying to maintain her dignity. Eventually, she seems to realise her position as a woman and is soon derailed by Hamlets accusations and quicker tongue. There is something pathetic in the way she moves from the attempt to be regal in: Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended. (Act 3 Scene 4 Line 10) to the simple, desperate and childlike: What shall I do? (Act 3 Scene 4 Line 199) at the end of the scene. Here, she is a victim in the way that she is trapped within her own mind and cannot dominate a mans view. Her opinions matter very little and she soon finds herself being led into Hamlets scheme against the King. Claudius, on the other hand, does seem to have some respect towards Gertrude. Her husband asks of her opinion and she is not afraid to say what she thinks when he asks her. He refers to her as Sweet Gertrude consistently, displaying a great love of her. However, perhaps Claudius sees Gertrude as a trophy for his successes, his win of the kingdom. He may also see her as a possession, as many men of that time did. True, he does treat her respectfully but, again, she is fairly passive in her response to him: I shall obey you. (Act 3 Scene 1 Line 42) reflecting how her actions revolve around a mans view. What the Queen doesnt realise is that she is a victim within the Kings attempt at plotting against her beloved son. In Act 4 Scene 7, there is a clear sense of how Claudius is putting his own survival before his bond with Gertrude. Gertrude is in the middle of an on going conflict between her son and her new husband. She genuinely loves Hamlet and Claudius, but the two men in her life are on a downward spiral and so is she. What she seems to want is something very basic: a happy family. But life as a woman in a mans pride driven world is denying her that. She is a victim in the way that Hamlet continues to harm her emotionally and in the sense that Claudius uses her as a mark of pride. Also, indirectly, she is a victim of the play as a whole. She drinks the poison, which the king set up for Hamlet and sadly dies. Claudius does not prevent her from doing so in order to disguise his guilt. Gertrude is a victim of the tragedy of the play and is eventually over powered by the manly pride driven battle. As said previously, men are prepared to use women, even their own family, in the power political game. The chief example of this is Ophelia. She spends much of the play bewildered about what is happening around her, as she tries to follow what her father, brother and Hamlet tell her to do. Immediately we see how Ophelia is a victim in the manly-dominated world of Elsinore. In Act 1 Scene 3, Laertes seems to be controlling her life for her. She takes his advice constantly and seems very dependent of him. The image in the words: Tis in my memory lockd, And you yourself shall keep the key of it. (Act 1 Scene 3 Line 90-91) gives us the impression that she allows him to control even her thoughts. Ophelia has no privacy in her life and seems to obey her father almost like a dog to its owner. Her passivity is reflected in her total acceptance of male authority: I shall obey, my lord. (Act 1 Scene 3 Line 141) The fact that Ophelia refers to her father as my lord implies that she may feel inferior to him. Possibly because he is her father or even simply because he is a male and regarded upon as the stronger species. Claudius treats Ophelia as a mere tool when he sets her up so that he and Polonius can spy on Hamlet. Polonius also neglects her feelings in this matter and bluntly commands her: Ophelia, walk you here Read on this book (Act 3 Scene 1 Line 49) She even appears a victim of her own father. Ophelia is clearly upset at this point in the play although Polonius and the King ignore this. However, she appears to be more upset for Hamlet rather than herself. This could be because she is so used to suppressing her needs that she doesnt even recognise them anymore.

In the novel Into Thin Air, the author Jon Krakauer shows us two characters who have some similarities, yet are markedly different. Rob Hall and Scott Fischer are both world renowned mountain climbers as well as the leaders and head guides of their own mountain climbing enterprises. Each employ the respect of his peers, yet here is where the similarities end. With differences in their physical stature, climbing styles, and safety concerns, it would seem that one was destined to succeed and other to fail. Krakauer describes Hall as being a thirty-five-year-old man standing at "six foot three or four and skinny as a pole" (31). His approach to climbing and guiding was meticulous and demanding. He paid close attention to details and had an intense desire to succeed. Hall made many successful climbs prior to his attempt at Everest. In 1990, after three separate attempts over a span of ten years, Hall finally made the summit of Everest. Hall’s flair for publicity had allowed him the success of his prior climbs, but he decided that the guiding business was preferable to constantly pursuing sponsorships. After creating Adventure Consultants, his mountain climbing enterprise, Hall became very successful at getting his clients to the top of Mount Everest. By 1996, he was charging sixty-five thousand dollars per person. This fee was the highest of all the companies on Mt. Everest. Hall’s success rate was not only due to his attention to detail but his attention to safety and the knowledge that without the Sherpas, any attempt at guiding on Everest would be disastrous. Hall’s ability to plan and coordinate ensured that his clients had plenty of food and supplies and that they became acclimatized to the higher altitudes. Each base camp ... ... Scott’s clients who were sick, instead of a Sherpa, I don’t think he would have been treated so haphazardly’" (113). Had Fischer not had such a lax approach to climbing, a guide would have been with Ngawang Toche and had him down the mountain sooner. While Hall was the better guide, both gentlemen held the respect of their peers for their individual climbing skills. Of the climbers on the mountains that day, they were considered the best. Yet despite their skills or their ability to guide, both succumbed to the tragedy on the mountain. Krakauer admired both Hall and Fischer for different reasons, yet he uses them as examples to show us that no matter how good, passionate, or skillful a person might be, the tragedy on the mountain was a cascade effect beyond human control. Expanding mobile services is a highly attractive opportunity for Best Buy.Although Best Buy has seen a decrease in sales in many of its stores, Best Buy Mobile has proven to be quite successful in the current market. Best Buy has seen a 5% loss in comparable stores, which would have been a 15% loss if the sales of Best Buy Mobile did not make up the damage. Acknowledging Best Buy as a global brand could have a significant impact, and presents an intriguing opportunity to Best Buy. Global innovation, consumer electronics, and the use of technology have never been more important in an international market than they are today.Best Buy has experienced success and failure in the international market. They have had success in Canada and Mexico, and have been unsuccessful in Europe and China. Best Buy needs to figure out how to adapt to foreign markets where they have been unsuccessful. If Best Buy can adapt to foreign markets more effectively than competitors it could create a competitive advantage. The way to successfully analyze an industry like the one Best Buy is in is through the Porter’s Five Forces Model. This will indicate whether or not the opportunities the industry presents are attractive enough to outweigh the threats.The first aspect of Porter’s Five Forces is the threat of new entrants. In an industry like Best Buy’s the threat of new entrants is not very high. Best Buy has already driven multiple competitors out of business. There are high barriers to entry, and Best Buy would not hesitate to retaliate if any new entrances transpired. The second aspect of the Porter’s Five Forces Model is the threat of substitute products. This is a concern for Best Buy because many of its competitors are selling similar products online.The products they sell are not highly differentiated amongst competitors, and many consumers feel their competitors provide a more convenient option. Best Buy th en must analyze the bargaining power of both suppliers and buyers in the industry. Best Buy serves as a middle man, so they do not have much power. This means that the bargaining power of suppliers is high. There are 20 suppliers that Best Buy uses for 65 percent of their products. Five of those 20 suppliers can account for 40 percent of their products.The bargaining power of the buyer is incredibly high in this industry because consumers have several different options, and different ways to purchase the products they want. Consumers can even browse products at a local Best Buy location, search for it online to see if their competitors offer a similar product at a lower price, and purchase the product somewhere else while they are in the store. The final aspect of the Porter’s Five Forces Model is to analyze the rivalry among competing firms. Best Buy’s industry provides a vast amount of rivalry among existing competitors.Purchasing consumer electronics online has beco me a common trend amongst consumers in recent years. Online retailers can maintain low costs because they don’t have the costs associated with brick and mortar locations. This allows companies like Amazon. com to steal market share from Best Buy. Other successful companies that are competitive in the industry are Wal-Mart, Costco, and Radio Shack. Based on the Porter’s Five Forces Model our analysis of the industry that Best Buy is in does not look too attractive. We would conclude that we should avoid this industry, and pursue a different direction.Strategy Development Best Buy’s big box retail stores currently follow a focused cost leadership strategy. Best Buy is best known for its big-box retail stores that offer a narrow scope of products that mainly consists of electronics. Best Buy generally advertises low prices, low price guarantees, and they offer price matching at many locations. Best Buy wants their consumers to perceive them as low cost so it can be inferred that they follow a cost leadership strategy, and since they only operate within the electronics market then that makes it a focused cost leadership strategy.The Best Buy Corporation follows a related diversification strategy. Other than the large retail locations, Best Buy currently owns Geek Squad, Best Buy Mobile, The Carphone Warehouse, and Five Stare Appliances. All of these stores have related resources, products and services. The Best Corporation tends to stick with electronics retail stores and related services. For example, Best Buy stores sell computers while Geek Squad repairs and services computers. One business serves and supports the other.Best Buy has a good corporate strategy where they only buy and operate business that sell consumer electronics or support/service consumer electronics, but best must address issues with their business level strategies. The bulk of Best Buy and its other companies business is electronics retail from brick and mortar locations where Best Buy acts as a middle man between electronics consumers and electronics manufactures, but because of internet retailers there is increasingly little need for brick and mortar retailers like Best Buy.Current trends show that more and more people are buying online because it is generally cheaper since people can buy direct from manufactures. If this trend continues, Best Buy’s big box retail stores will become obsolete and start to lose money. Best Buy has an online retail service but the brick and mortar locations still make up the majority of Best Buy’s sales. The first recommendation is that Best Buy should shift the retail part of their businesses to being more online, while keeping the non-retail services like Geek Squad.The next recommendation is that Best Buy should grow more internationally, specifically Europe. Best Buy has a strong presence in North America, but has a lot of room to grow in Europe. In Europe Best Buy mostly exists as The Carphone War ehouse, which is similar to the American Best Buy stores but the majority of The Carphone Warehouse revenue comes from selling electronics insurance and electronics repair. Best Buys could expand more into the European electronics retail market both in-store and online.Strategy Selection We believe that the better of the two strategies is to move the retail parts of Best Buy’s business to being more online. They shouldn’t move it completely online, but Best Buy should try and sell more online to try and compete with the online retailers. Best Buy has had problems with people coming into stores, looking for items, and then going home and buying them online from places like Amazon. If the customers are buying online then Best Buy should be more competitive online.The brick and mortar stores could be more like show rooms that advertise products for the online store. If Best Buy takes this route, they should then make their online prices more competitive and be sure to adv ertise those lower online prices in the stores. Implementation In the next 3 to 6 months, Best Buy can implement its strategy of increasing profit by cutting low performing stores, increasing advertising, and increasing employee training. On the tactical level, Best Buy should cut the stores performing in the bottom 2%, which would be about 28 stores.This will lower the high fixed costs associated with maintaining large brick and mortar locations. Best Buy should then move the inventory from these locations to warehouses used for online purchases and buy more warehouses if necessary. Best Buy should also increase advertising for its new price matching policy in order to gain back some of the market it lost to competitors like Amazon. On the operational level, Best Buy should increase its training to employees so that sales associates gain valuable customer relationship management skills that provide value to customers.These tactical and operational moves will cause challenges that B est Buy must address. First, a large number of layoffs can reflect badly on Best Buy, possibly causing its stock prices to be lower. Best Buy could combat this by launching a â€Å"goodwill campaign,† expressing the savings that will be passed on to its customers. Secondly, increasing warehouse capacity could lead to high costs for Best Buy. The company should combat this by controlling its inventory holding costs and ensuring that online sales match its inventory.Finally, the cost of training employees will be a challenge to meet. Best Buy must make this training worth the expense by ensuring that the quality of customer service will result in revenues high enough to cover the costs. Customer surveys would be a good quality control for the sales staff. Customers should be given the option to answer questions about their Best Buy experience via text messages, calls, or email, and sales associates should be given rewards points for good reviews.

What comes to mind when you hear the word â€Å"bomb†? Is it the Boston Marathon tragedy? Is it the Pearl Harbor Bombing? How about the World Trade Center attack? All of these are major bombings that have happened in the U.S. Sadly, they aren’t the only ones. There have been numerous bombings that our world has survived, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t suffered from their outcomes. The devastation of war on our world is monumental. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima is an important event in history that has affected people greatly throughout the years since that tragic day. The effects of the Hiroshima bombing on Japan were life shattering. Death counts rose as high as 80,000, just after the bomb was dropped, and 50,000 more later died of injuries, radiation contact, sicknesses, and long-term effects such as cancer and birth deficiencies(Counting Deaths). This totaled 130,000 dead. (â€Å"The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki†) â€Å"The plane dropp ed the bomb--known as Little Boy--by parachute at 8:15 in the morning, and it exploded 2,000 feet above Hiroshima in a blast equal to 12-15,000 tons of TNT, destroying five square miles of the city† (â€Å"The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki†).
